A Second Look at Second Harvest

KCW is proud to spotlight Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania. All donations received during our February Food Drive, held Tuesdays this month, will go to this worthy organization. Read on for just a snapshot of the work they do . . . and the lives they touch!

Hunger is a growing -- and appalling -- problem in America. Studies show that one in seven American families struggle to meet food needs (see http://www.worldhunger.org). And our area is not immune. Each month, 66,000 people are served by Second Harvest Food Bank, covering Lehigh, Carbon, Monroe, Northampton, Pike and Wayne counties. Over half of those individuals are children and seniors.

Second Harvest began its work in the area in 1982 as Lehigh Valley Food Bank and is part of the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley. The name was changed recently when they partnered with Feeding America, a national organization formerly known as America's Second Harvest. Their goal is simple: end the senseless problem of hunger.

Originally, the food bank was very basic - passing out canned items from the back of a rented truck. Today, workers and volunteers operate out of a 18K-square-foot warehouse in Allentown and lease other locations as well.

Last year, Second Harvest distributed over 5.7 million pounds of food to area agencies. And every $1 donated to Second Harvest equals 9 pounds of food for someone in need. That translates to roughly 7 meals for an individual. See what a difference a dollar can make!

Put a Little Love In Your Heart

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and love is in the air. And while romantic love is all well and good, we'd like to take the opportunity to focus on neighborly love, especially love for a neighbor in need.

With that thought in mind, the Kuhnsville Car Wash is sponsoring our first February Food Drive! Just bring in a can (or two, or more) of food to our car wash, and receive a coupon for a free basic wash the next time you're at KCW.

All food items collected will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley. Check expiration dates to make sure food is not expired. Most needed items include:

cereal
peanut butter & jelly
tuna & other canned meats
pasta & rice
soups & stews
canned veggies & fruit
salt & sugar

And don't limit yourself to food! Second Harvest also stocks personal care items. Diapers, laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste and shampoo are in high demand.

KCW's February Food Drive will be held the next three Tuesdays; that's February 14, February 21 and February 28. So grab a few cans of food and take this opportunity to show some love to a neighbor in need. And thanks for helping us show that KCW Cares.

Fundraising is one way KCW likes to support thecommunity. Groups who sell KCWcertificates find an easy and profitable way to raise money for their group orevent, and they get to keep 50% of the proceeds!

It’s a fairly simple process. Order books of $10 Kuhnsville Car Wash giftcertificates, sell them to the public for retail value and keep half of theproceeds for your group. Yes, that’s a50-50 split, a great percentage for a fundraiser. Also, no up-front money is required. Pick up your coupons and, 30 days later,return unsold certificates, pay your portion of what you sold, and keep therest of the proceeds.

Got the Winter Driver Blues?

The last few days can attest to this fact: we are definitely in the middle of winter. And a northeast Pennsylvanian winter means snow, ice, sleet, more snow . . . and lots and lots of salt on roads.

It won’t surprise you to hear that January is, on average, the coldest month in Pennsylvania. In the Allentown area, we can expect nine or more inches of snow, sleet and ice in January, and a whopping 32.4 inches over the entire winter season. (See the National Climate Data Center - http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov - for more fun winter statistics.) That’s a lot of snow!

Some people love the snow. You’ll see them out in their yards, regardless of age, building snowmen and snow forts and making snow angels. They head out to ski or snowboard on local slopes. They think nothing of taking a drive the day after a snowfall just to admire all that gleaming white stuff.

Others (your's truly included) aren’t such fans. We tolerate the snow, preferring to glance at it from inside our toasty homes while sipping coffee. We only venture out in our (heated) vehicles when we need to go to work or when we can’t put off grabbing some milk, bread and other essentials.

No matter what your feelings about winter weather are, you can be sure you will be in the snow in your vehicle this winter. And you can be sure your car will show it. We are happy to announce the publishing of our newly revised iPhone app! An improvement over our last app, the revised version is more user friendly and offers new features.

Precision Auto has put together winter car washing tips in their article, How To Save Your Car From Harsh Winter Weather.

Precision Auto says, "Mud and salt caked on the undercarriage can even help promote rust - especially in older vehicles - and can also affect how well your car drives...To prevent winter damage, it is recommended that you wash your vehicle every 10 days."

Salt can be very detrimental to a car's finish. It's important to take care of your investment. By being proactive and keeping up with cleaning your vehicle's exterior, you will increase its longevity.

A recent article in the Upper Macungie Patch broke the news to local customers. All KCW apps are intended to provided customers with "instant" information about the car wash.
